The statue of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founder of Bangladesh, which had been proposed for Brunswick Square Gardens, was rejected by 7 to 1 at the Camden Development Control committee on Thursday 28 June. Friends of Brunswick Square, the statutory consultee the Garden History Society, London Parks and Gardens Trust, the Bloomsbury Conservation Area Advisory Committee and many knowledgeable individuals in the field of conservation had all objected on the grounds of the listed status of the gardens and the damage to its relaxed garden style if a formal statue with associated paving was to be erected in a prominent position in a square that has never had statues in its history. Sections of the Bangladeshi community also raised objections on the subject of the statue. Friends of Brunswick Square are very grateful to everyone who supported their campaign.
