This recently published book (Yale University Press, 2012) by Todd Longstaffe-Gowan on a unique feature of London, its ‘green enclaves’ or garden squares, covers the history, evolution and social implications of these open spaces in the midst of town. The book covers their ups and downs over the centuries. There are fascinating pictures, plans and maps and however well you know these places, you’ll find something new.
