Autumn’s glory in the Bloomsbury squares
Autumn colour on the Bloomsbury trees is glorious this autumn, from the red maple in Gordon Square, the autumn-yellow ginkgo in Tavistock Square and the wondrous 200+ year old plane tree in Brunswick Square -and many, many others. It’s been a firework show to lift the spirits in shorter, darker days.
Spring has sprung
A wonderful week of warm sunshine brought March in like a lamb and the crowds came out to enjoy it in Gordon Square, among others. We felt spring had come to the Bloomsbury Squares at last after gloomy, cold January and February. But alas, more normal weather has returned this chilly week.
Shady seating north of Gordon Square
On hot city days, the new seating area in the pedestrianised street at the north end of Gordon Square, provides a cool retreat from the heat.
Spring colour in Tavistock and Gordon Squares
A great result arising from the volunteers’ planting efforts in Tavistock Square in autumn 2023….and Gordon Square (maintained by the University of London) has had a wonderful display of spring bulbs in the grass.
Fiery autumn colours

While tiny at present, they will have spring blossom as they grow, hopefully to full size. (The fruits are edible […]

No Mow May is a national campaign by Plantlife. The benefits are: Providing more nectar for ten times the amount of bees, butterflies, moths and […]
Light and Shade in the Bloomsbury Gardens: View festival drawings of the squares online
The artist Nick Andrew had a busy (and exhausting!) 9 days from 16 – 24 October, drawing, demonstrating and meeting visitors in and around the Bloomsbury garden squares for the Bloomsbury Festival, with the theme of ‘Shining Light’. (See the ‘Bedford Square’ drawing below.) We’re planning an exhibition of the drawings in Bloomsbury shortly (details […]
Cafe culture returns to the Bloomsbury gardens
During lockdown 3, our cafes have been offering takeaway food and drink that we’ve been able to sit on a park bench to ‘enjoy’ as we shivered. Now the sun is out (and we’re still shivering), but soon the pleasures of sitting at a table in the gardens with a friend will be ours again. […]
