Friends of St George’s Gardens report that their fringe event during Open Garden Squares Weekend on 8-9 June 8-9 was very successful. The weather was good. Friends member Annette Freeman put her word clues on the trees early on Saturday morning and she and a rota of Friends welcomed visitors with the Words of the wood booklet. Collingham Gardens Nursery, Mecklenburgh Square, Bedford Square and the BMA all pointed their OGSW visitors in our direction, so publicity was good. There were about 120 visitors on each day, not counting local people who were just walking through. Camden guides took walks through the Gardens. St Athans Hotel told its guests about us.
Big thanks from the Friends to everyone who helped.
After this pioneering event, now that Open Garden Squares Weekend are only accepting closed squares and gardens to their programme, we’re thinking what might be done next year with other Bloomsbury Squares and Gardens to make a full-size Bloomsbury Squares Fringe festival during Open Gardens Squares Weekend 2020.
