In the next few days, you might like to visit the evergreen strawberry trees (Arbutus) by the path side of the Caffè in Russell Square. The ripe ‘strawberry’ fruits are currently hanging in clusters accompanied by creamy-white flowers. But this rare sight may not last long before the birds and squirrels eat them! Birds love the red fruits. For us they are less tasty raw than they look, though they can can be used cooked and in jams. Bees love the small creamy flowers in early winter when nectar is scarce.
I love Strawberry trees and noticed this in flower recently. Hope to catch the fruit phase too…thanks for the alert.
Let us know if you’re lucky enough to see some!
will do!
